Toledo, OH – An organized workstation is essential. It encourages workers to be more productive as well as reduces work-related stress and time spent looking for supplies.
For the professional cleaning worker, a workstation is a professional janitorial cart.
However, according to Dennis Knapp, Director of Product Development at Impact Products and manufacturer of janitorial carts, to use janitorial carts most effectively, they must be organized.
Here are his suggestions on how to organize janitorial carts:
Supplies. Determine which cleaning solutions will be most frequently used. “The cart is not designed to carry all supplies. Instead, just those that need to be readily available most of the time.”
Prioritization. Place all supplies on the ground. This will help provide a broader perspective of what cleaning tools are used. Then, organize the chemicals so that those most commonly used are nearest to the (back) handle of the cart and those least used farthest away. If the cart has a lower shelf, place items that are frequently used there as well.
Flexibility. While organizing the cart is crucial, managers should allow for some flexibility. Some workers will want certain supplies in a specific area. In such cases, if it is easier for them, let them have their say in the setup process.
Consistency. It is best to have one cart for each cleaning worker. Each worker will have his/her cart set up a certain way. This can also promote safety. For example, a worker may reach for a cleaning solution from memory, potentially selecting the wrong product. Having one cart for each cleaning worker will prevent mishaps like this and save a lot of time.
“If possible, allow the cleaning workers or housekeepers to be involved in the [janitorial cart] selection process from the start,” adds Knapp. “After all, it’s going to be their workstation. Managers want them to be happy with it.”
