The “Barklings” are Coming: Dogs in the Office

The “Barklings” are Coming: Dogs in the Office was published for client Secure Clean BSI

While remote working is likely to continue, a report by Cushman & Wakefield predicts this will slowly change.dogs in the office

Replacing remote working will be intermittent remote working.  Staff may work some days at home and other days in the office.

And when they return, many staffers will want to bring their dogs to the office with them.

Dog owners have grown even more attached to their dogs since the pandemic began. Leaving them home for hours every day is no longer something they want to do.

But dogs in the office is nothing new.

Amazon has allowed them for years and now has more than 4,000 dogs in their offices on any given day.

Ben & Jerrys has office “K9-5ers” and Eventbrite office “barklings,” as they are called.  Further, Google have also allowed dogs in the office for years.

In fact, at Google, if a dog bears an official Google picture ID, they can roam the company’s entire corporate campus on their own.

“However, all these companies have rules and regulations,” says Rick VanderKoy, CEO of Secure Clean BSI, a leading building service contractor in Illinois. “It’s having rules and regulations in place that make these ‘dogs in the office’ programs work.”

According to VanderKoy, the rules and regulations he advises his corporate clients to adopt are the following:

  • Employees must get the OK of nearby staffers for them to bring their dogs.
  • Have a good behavior “dog” interview.
  • Proof of vaccinations is mandatory.
  • Establish areas where dogs are not allowed, such as kitchens or conference rooms.
  • Note if there are days dogs cannot be brought into the office.
  • Prepare a “Canine Code of Conduct,” requiring that dogs be quiet and not damage furniture or fixtures.
  • The dog owners must address “accidents” immediately and notify cleaning staff for further cleaning and disinfecting.

“Finally, have employees take the ‘Four Paws Pledge:’ They promise to be Responsible, Pragmatic, Transparent, and Compliant, following all regulations while their dog is in the office.”
